In a moment of obvious weakness, I was asked to contribute a column to the new Great Dane Gallery. Well, here we go… I have known many of you for a long time and there are others that I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting. However, we all share one common element – our love for the Great Dane. Just as a mini-bio… I have been involved with Danes for nearly 40 years. My wife and I lived in Miami during the time when we were active breeders/exhibitors. Without getting too detailed, let me suffice to say that we were very fortunate during those years. Because the scope of our activity was basically confined to the southeast, there were many wonderful breeding programs that we had to admire from afar. We moved to Michigan in 1995 (don’t ask!). This has broadened my exposure to several fine programs and many Great Dane advocates. I began judging in 1984, at which time, we stopped our breeding program. Although, the AKC allows a person to breed, exhibit and judge (with some necessary and common sense restrictions), I have never thought that doing so gave a proper impression. I am a member of the GDCA, the Wolverine GDC of Western Michigan and the Ann Arbor Kennel Club. I was on the board of the GDC of South Florida for over 20 years. I want this column to be fun and informative. I would ask input from any and all readers with regards to the following: 1) The names of any individuals that you would be interested in being interviewed for this column. I hope that all of you will e-mail me with your valued input. Please send it to… Bill |
